Breakthrough in Special Alkaline Batteries: Safer, More Efficient and Eco-Friendly Solutions Emerge

2026 04/03

April 3, 2026 – Recent advances in battery technology have led to the development of special alkaline batteries that combine enhanced performance, improved safety and stronger environmental compatibility, addressing long-standing challenges in the primary battery industry and opening up new application prospects in consumer electronics, medical devices and industrial sectors.
A team of researchers led by Xiaowei Teng, the James H. Manning Professor in Chemical Engineering at WPI, recently published a groundbreaking study in Chemsuschem, revealing a new approach to improve the performance of special alkaline batteries by using silicate as an electrolyte additive. The innovation effectively suppresses hydrogen gas generation during charging, a key technical bottleneck that has long limited the energy efficiency and storage capacity of iron-based alkaline batteries.
“Iron is an abundant and sustainable material, making it an ideal candidate for battery anodes, but its practical application in alkaline batteries has been hindered by hydrogen production and iron oxide formation,” said Teng. “By adding silicate to the electrolyte, we have successfully resolved these issues, paving the way for high-performance, low-cost special alkaline batteries suitable for grid energy storage and other large-scale applications.”
Meanwhile, industrial players are accelerating the commercialization of special alkaline batteries with upgraded features. VARTA AG, a global leader in battery technology, has expanded its Alkaline Special product line, launching premium mercury-free batteries in special formats designed for devices requiring sustained energy supply. These batteries boast a 3.5-year shelf life, low self-discharge and stable performance, making them ideal for medical devices, calculators, remote controls and toys.
Market data shows that the global special alkaline battery sector is experiencing robust growth, driven by rising demand for reliable and eco-friendly power solutions. According to a recent report by Newstrail, the global alkaline battery market, including special variants, is projected to grow from USD 9.2 billion in 2025 to USD 15.2 billion by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.2%. Special alkaline batteries, with their tailored performance for specific scenarios, are expected to account for an increasing share of this growth.
In China, a major producer and consumer of alkaline batteries, policy support and technological innovation are fueling the development of special alkaline batteries. The country’s strict environmental regulations, such as the revised Regulations on Restricting Mercury Content in Batteries and the Green Product Evaluation – Batteries standard (GB/T 39749-2023), have pushed manufacturers to develop mercury-free, low-emission products. Domestic leading enterprises have achieved breakthroughs in low-temperature performance, self-discharge control and carbon footprint reduction, with the localization rate of key materials such as electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) exceeding 93%.
Industry experts note that special alkaline batteries are evolving to meet diverse market needs. High-power variants, which can deliver continuous discharge of over 500 mA, are gaining traction in electric toothbrushes and portable audio devices, while ultra-long storage models with a shelf life of more than 10 years are widely used in emergency equipment and smart home devices. Additionally, custom-made special alkaline batteries for B-end clients in medical electronics and IoT sensors are becoming a new growth driver, with B-end customized procurement accounting for 15.3% of the market share in China.
Despite the rise of lithium-ion and rechargeable batteries, special alkaline batteries maintain their competitive edge due to their affordability, wide availability and suitability for low-maintenance scenarios. “Special alkaline batteries fill a unique niche in the market, particularly for devices that require long-term storage, stable voltage and cost-effective power supply,” said an industry analyst from FMI. “With ongoing technological innovations and growing environmental awareness, their application scope will continue to expand.”
Looking ahead, researchers and manufacturers will focus on further improving energy density, reducing costs and enhancing recyclability. The integration of nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes is expected to further boost battery performance, while the promotion of regenerative materials and closed-loop recycling systems will help achieve the industry’s green development goals. As smart home, wearable devices and IoT terminals become more prevalent, special alkaline batteries are poised to play a more critical role in powering the future of portable energy.
