Groundbreaking Electrolyte Technology Boosts Lithium-Ion Battery Performance, Driving Global Energy Transition

2026 03/21

March 21, 2026 – The global lithium-ion battery industry has entered a new era of technological breakthroughs, with a pioneering electrolyte innovation from a Chinese research team pushing the boundaries of energy density and low-temperature performance. As the core power source for new energy vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics, lithium-ion batteries are playing an increasingly pivotal role in the global green energy transition, with continuous technological upgrades reshaping industry dynamics and market growth.
On February 26, 2026, a research team led by Zhao Qing from Nankai University, Chen Jun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Li Yong from the Shanghai Space Power Research Institute published a landmark study in the international academic journal Nature, introducing a new fluorinated hydrocarbon-based electrolyte system that breaks the long-standing kinetic constraints of oxygen coordination in traditional electrolytes. This innovation has enabled lithium-ion batteries to achieve an ultra-high energy density of 700 Wh/kg at room temperature, marking a major leap forward in battery technology.
Traditional lithium-ion battery electrolytes are typically composed of lithium salts and carbonate-based solvents, where the ion-dipole interaction between lithium and oxygen in carbonate solvents promotes lithium salt dissolution. However, this approach suffers from poor wettability, high solvent consumption, and hindered interfacial charge transfer, limiting both energy density and low-temperature performance—with most batteries failing to operate below -50℃. The new fluorinated hydrocarbon solvent system developed by the team replaces the traditional lithium-oxygen coordination with lithium-fluorine coordination, which is weaker and facilitates faster charge transfer even in extreme cold conditions.
The advantages of the new electrolyte are remarkable: it not only reduces electrolyte usage significantly due to its excellent wettability and high utilization rate but also maintains high performance in harsh environments. Tests show that batteries equipped with this electrolyte retain an energy density of nearly 400 Wh/kg at -50℃, addressing a critical pain point for applications in extreme cold regions, aerospace, and low-temperature industrial scenarios. “This electrolyte technology unlocks vast application potential in new energy vehicles, embodied intelligent robots, low-altitude economy, and aerospace,” noted Chen Jun, co-leader of the research team.
Beyond this groundbreaking electrolyte innovation, the global lithium-ion battery industry is witnessing robust growth driven by surging demand in key application sectors. According to industry reports, the global lithium-ion battery market is expected to exceed $300 billion by 2030, with global shipments surpassing 2.5 TWh in 2026—a year-on-year increase of over 25%. The energy storage sector has emerged as the fastest-growing segment, with global shipments of energy storage lithium-ion batteries exceeding 850 GWh in 2026, a year-on-year growth of more than 35%, and even surpassing power batteries as the primary growth driver in some regions.
The power battery segment also maintains steady growth, with global shipments exceeding 1.5 TWh in 2026, supporting the expansion of the new energy vehicle industry. High-nickel ternary lithium-ion batteries, with energy density exceeding 300 Wh/kg, are increasingly adopted in long-range new energy vehicles, accounting for 45% of new vehicle installations this year. Meanwhile, lithium iron phosphate batteries have achieved significant upgrades, with energy density breaking 200 Wh/kg and supporting 6C ultra-fast charging, meeting the efficiency needs of both electric vehicles and energy storage stations.
The industry’s growth is also accompanied by changes in the industrial chain. In 2026, the global lithium-ion battery industrial chain entered a new cycle of rising volume and prices, with tight supply of key raw materials driving up costs. The average price of battery-grade lithium carbonate stabilized at 120,000 yuan per ton, a year-on-year increase of over 80%, while prices of electrolytes, lithium iron phosphate, and other key materials rose by 15% to 30%. Major manufacturers, including CATL, BYD, and Ganfeng Lithium, are accelerating R&D investment to optimize material utilization and reduce production costs, while strengthening industrial chain collaboration.
“Lithium-ion batteries are the cornerstone of the global energy transition, and technological innovations like the new electrolyte system are critical to unlocking their full potential,” said a senior industry analyst. “As demand for clean energy and electrification continues to grow, we will see more breakthroughs in battery materials, manufacturing processes, and application scenarios, driving the industry toward higher energy density, better durability, and greater sustainability.”
Looking ahead, the lithium-ion battery industry will focus on advancing electrolyte technology, optimizing battery structure, and expanding application boundaries. The integration of new materials, intelligent manufacturing, and digital monitoring will further enhance battery performance and safety, while promoting the popularization of lithium-ion batteries in emerging fields such as electric commercial vehicles, data center backup power, and marine electrification, solidifying their role as a core driver of the global green energy revolution.
