Solid-State Battery Breakthroughs Accelerate Commercialization: EV Range Set to Surpass 1,000km

2026 01/17

January 17, 2026 – The global battery technology landscape is undergoing a seismic shift as major advancements in solid-state battery (SSB) technology break through long-standing commercialization barriers. According to the "2025 China Solid-State Battery Industry Development White Paper" released by EVTank, the global solid-state battery market is projected to reach 614.1 GWh in shipments by 2030, with fully solid-state batteries accounting for nearly 30% of the total. This rapid growth is driven by breakthroughs in material science, aggressive industrialization plans by key players, and strong policy support worldwide.
A critical bottleneck hindering solid-state battery adoption has been the poor interfacial contact between rigid solid electrolytes and soft metallic lithium electrodes, which severely impacts charge-discharge efficiency. However, Chinese research teams have recently achieved three pivotal technological breakthroughs to address this challenge. Scientists from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), developed an iodine-ion-based "special adhesive" that autonomously fills micro-gaps at the electrode-electrolyte interface during battery operation, significantly enhancing ion transport efficiency. Meanwhile, researchers from the Institute of Metal Research, CAS, created a flexible polymer framework for electrolytes, enabling the battery to withstand 20,000 bends without damage while boosting energy storage capacity by 86%. Additionally, Tsinghua University’s team modified electrolytes using fluorinated polyether materials, forming a protective fluoride layer that ensures safety even under extreme conditions such as 120°C high temperatures and needle-puncture tests.
These technological leaps have translated into tangible performance gains. State-of-the-art solid-state batteries now boast energy densities ranging from 400 to 500 Wh/kg, a stark contrast to the 250-300 Wh/kg of conventional lithium-ion batteries. This advancement enables electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve a driving range exceeding 1,000 km on a single charge, doubling the range of most current EV models. "The interfacial contact issue was the 'Achilles' heel' of solid-state batteries," said a senior researcher at CAS. "Our combined innovations have effectively resolved this problem, paving the way for large-scale commercialization."
Industrial players are moving swiftly to capitalize on these advancements. Farasis Energy announced that its 60Ah sulfide-based fully solid-state battery is on track for small-batch delivery to strategic partners by the end of 2025, with its second-generation semi-solid-state battery (energy density >330 Wh/kg, cycle life >4,000 cycles) set for mass production in 2025, targeting applications in low-altitude economy and humanoid robots. Beijing Pure Lithium New Energy Technology has launched the world’s first commercial fully solid-state battery solution, initially deployed in e-bike battery swapping and energy storage systems. Overseas, BMW Group recently initiated road testing of its first prototype vehicle equipped with fully solid-state batteries in Munich, marking a key milestone in its collaboration with battery technology firms.
Beyond automotive applications, solid-state batteries are expanding into diverse sectors. Narada Power introduced a 783Ah ultra-large-capacity solid-state battery for energy storage, featuring a cycle life of over 10,000 times and energy efficiency exceeding 95%, making it suitable for large-scale energy storage projects. In the consumer electronics field, leading brands like VIVO are exploring solid-state batteries to enhance device portability and battery life. The burgeoning eVTOL and humanoid robot sectors are also emerging as high-potential markets, driven by their demand for high-energy-density, safe power sources.
Policy support is further fueling industry growth. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) included solid-state battery standardization in its 2025 Automobile Standardization Work Priorities, aiming to establish a comprehensive standard system for the technology. Meanwhile, international renewable energy agencies highlight that solid-state batteries, alongside sodium-ion batteries, will play a crucial role in advancing global energy transition goals, particularly in extreme climate conditions where their stability outperforms traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Despite remaining challenges such as reducing production costs and scaling up manufacturing, industry experts remain optimistic. "Solid-state batteries are no longer a distant concept but a rapidly maturing technology that will redefine the future of mobility and energy storage," noted an analyst at Guosen Securities. With major automakers planning large-scale vehicle testing by 2027 and mass production by 2030, the era of solid-state battery-powered devices is poised to dawn in the coming decade.
